Society History
The Society was originally founded in 1980 as the Braintree and District Astronomical Society, but became the Braintree & Halstead AS and later the Braintree AS. The change to the present name of North Essex Astronomical Society was made in 2000, to better represent the wide geographical area it’s membership covers.
The Munday-Sayer Observatory
The observatory, based near Wakes Colne, is named after two key people in it’s history – one responsible for its initial construction, one key to the Society gaining access to it.
Charles Munday CChem MRSE (1915 – 1985)
Les Sayer DSM MBE (1915 – 2008)
